Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, recently shared that Google’s search engine will experience a huge change in 2025. He believes that by then, the search engine will be able to answer much more complex questions than it does today.
Pichai mentioned this while speaking at the New York Times’ DealBook Summit, explaining that users will be surprised by the new features and capabilities that will appear in Google Search in early 2025.
Mr. Pichai said that Google’s popular search engine would “change profoundly” in the next year, despite his expectation that the pace of A.I. development would slow in 2025.
“I think you’ll be surprised even early in ’25 the kind of newer things search can do compared to where it is today,” he said.
Google is seen as facing an innovator’s dilemma in generative A.I., since its search dominance could be displaced by chatbots, such as ChatGPT and other apps. Mr. Pichai acknowledged the challenge, but he said Google could innovate quickly enough to overcome it.
Pichai also responded to a comment made by Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, who had said that Google should have been leading in the AI race.
In his response, Pichai welcomed a comparison between Google’s AI models and Microsoft’s models, pointing out that Microsoft is relying on someone else’s technology, referring to Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI.
Looking ahead, Pichai sees this as the beginning of a major shift in technology. He believes there is still a lot of room for innovation, and Google is focused on staying at the cutting edge of AI. He emphasized that Google is committed to being a leader in this field.
Earlier this year, Google started updating its search engine by introducing AI-powered summaries and a new feature in Google Lens that allows users to search the web using videos.
The company is also preparing to launch an important update to its AI model, Gemini, to compete with other companies like Microsoft, OpenAI, and the AI search engine Perplexity.
