Google Launches Veo: A New AI Tool for High-Quality Video Creation

Google has launched a new AI tool called Veo, which can generate high-quality videos from text or images. This tool was first announced in May, and now it is available in a private preview through Google’s Vertex AI platform. The launch of Veo is significant because it comes ahead of OpenAI’s similar AI video tool, called Sora, which has not yet been released.

Veo can create 1080p videos in various styles, including cinematic looks. These videos can be made from prompts in the form of text or images, and they can last longer than a minute.

However, Google hasn’t given an exact length limit for the videos in this private preview. The quality of the videos generated by Veo is so high that, unless you look closely, it’s very hard to tell they were created by AI.

Text-to-video

Along with Veo, Google is also making its Imagen 3 text-to-image AI available to more customers. Imagen 3 is a tool that can generate images based on text prompts, and starting next week, it will be available to all Google Cloud customers through Vertex.

Google is also adding new features, such as the ability to edit photos based on prompts and the option to add your own brand, logo, or product to generated images.

Google has added safety features to Veo and Imagen 3 to avoid creating harmful content or breaking copyright laws. However, some users have reported that it’s still possible to get around these protections. To help with this, both Veo and Imagen 3 will include a technology called SynthID.

This is a digital watermark that Google says can help prevent misinformation or content being falsely credited to someone else. It’s similar to Adobe’s Content Credentials system, which does something similar for its own AI-generated content.

With Google’s video AI tool now available, OpenAI’s Sora is still behind schedule. OpenAI had planned to release Sora by the end of 2024, but it hasn’t been launched yet.

Meanwhile, companies like Coca-Cola are already using AI-generated content in their advertising campaigns, so businesses are eager to use these tools and are not waiting for Sora. In fact, Google claims that 86% of organizations using generative AI are seeing an increase in their revenue.
